Due to the Social Graces Workshop on Wednesday, there will be no PE lesson.

However on Friday, the first half of the day will be the Inter-class Games. We will have our Indoor PE after recess (10.30am - 11.50am). It'll be badminton and floorball. Thus those pupils who want to play badminton, please bring along your shuttlecocks and rackets on Friday. Please do not have too heavy a recess too, especially if you're playing floorball.

The song that is playing in the background (I hope it is playing) is "Colours of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams. It is the theme song from the Disney movie "Pocahontas". I just want to share the lyrics here as there is the message on appreciating and conserving Earth. :)

How's day 1 of your PSLE Oral exams? Hope it has gone well for all of you.

Below is another list of pointers which I have observed today:

Read loudly!
During the conversation, do not play with the exam question papers (passage and picture).
Absolutely no Singlish (do not say your 'lahs')!
Have eye contact with the examiners.
Avoid moving your hands too much (e.g. brushing your hair, supporting your head, scratching your body etc.).
Do not rock your chair!
Remember to thank the examiners.

I've said enough on how to deal with the exam in class. Right now, I just want to remind you guys to be courteous, polite and show your best mannerism to the examiners. Remember to:

have eye contact with the examiners
smile and greet them ("Good morning, teachers.")

do not drag your chair or shake your legs!!

Teacher's Day Celebration

As mentioned before, I'll be away for my 3-week Reservist Training from 25th August (Mon) to 12th Sep (Fri). However I'll back back for just one day on the last day of this school term, 29th Aug (Fri), which coincides with the school's Teacher's Day celebration.

I would like to say this - please do not spend money on buying gifts for me. I really do appreciate your kind gestures and intentions (if you are thinking of doing so), BUT I would prefer you guys to save your monies, spend more of your time and effort on revising for your Prelims / PSLE.

If you really do have some spare cash and time to spare, I would suggest that you spend them on something for your parents / guardians whom I'm sure have also put it lots of time and effort in bringing you up and helping you with your studies. That would be something on my wish list. However, I'm sure doing your best (EXCELLENCE) and getting a good grade would be the best gift every teacher would hope for.

Study hard, 6 Excellence!

U10: Impact on the Environment

Key Learning Points:

Man's actions on the environment (the impacts) can be good (positive) or bad (negative).

On the positive impacts, man has created man-made materials such as alloys, plastics and ceramics.

This gives us a wider variety of choices of materials and also allows us to make things with better properties.

In addition, this extra choices of materials will not exhaust (use up) our natural materials too quickly.

On the negative impacts, man has removed trees (deforestation) because we need more land spaces and timber.

Thus, deforestation can cause the loss of living things (loss of food, shelter and therefore lives), soil erosion (no roots to hold the top layer of fertile soil during floods) and global warming (extra carbon dioxide in the air causing trapping heat in the Earth, thereby causing a rise in the Earth's temperature).

Besides deforestation, man has contributed to pollution of the land, air and water.

The common pollutants include litter and rubbish, human waste, harmful chemicals, smoke and haze, as well as CFCs.

4 of our NE ambassadors are involved in a robotics competition, that requires them to use a robot to tell the Singapore story. The girls are Charis Tay (5A), Chan Kah Mun (5A), Cheo Kaiqing (5A) and Alanna (5D).

2. Multiply this number by 2.
3. Add 5.
4. Multiply it by 50.
5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758. If you haven't, add 1757.
6. Now subtract the 4-digit year that you were born in. You should have a three digit number.

The first digit of this was your original number. (I.e., how many times you want to go out to eat in a week.)

Key Learning Points:

Adaptations refer to the special characteristics or features that helps an organism to survive in its natural habitat.

By survival, we mean the organism is able to (1) find food, air and water, (2) escape from predators, (3) cope with the environment conditions, (4) reproduce.

There are many kinds of adaptations such as adaptations for (1) movement, (2) breathing in water, (3) protection, (4) obtaining sunlight for plants, (5) coping with the environment (temperature and light), (6) reproduction.

Do be familiar with the different examples for each kind of adaptation and be able to explain how it helps the organism to survive.

Do be able to classify the various examples into either structural adaptations (body parts) or behavioural adaptations (behaviours and reactions)

What Went Wrong?

The smoke and ashes from the battles of SA1 has almost settled. Lives, blood and tears had been shed and lost. The victors of these battles are apparent.

However, does it matter now?

Is shedding further tears of anguish the only thing we can do at this moment? Is it time for further whining and complaints about how the whole world is at fault except ourselves?

What I want to say is, time to do some self-reflection.

Ask yourself the following questions for each subject. Give your most honest answers and please do not compare with your friends. It is YOU whom we are talking about.

Are you happy with your results?
Why?
Can you improve on it?
What went wrong?
For each of the areas that has gone wrong, are you able to work on some solutions to solve them?
Are those solutions possible or practical and more importantly, within your abilities?

If you have done well for this exam, I congratulate you. If you have not, please do work on the solutions to improve them. Regardless of your subjects, all the teachers will help you if you are sincere about improving and are willing to let us help you.

It takes two hands to clap. While the final battle 'PSLE' is about 5 months away, it is still not too late to 'lick your wounds' and 'train up'.

For those who are still sleeping or are in 'La La-land', time to wake up . Let us help each other through this important year. IT CAN BE DONE!

Final Exam Tips and Reminders

Mathematics

Go through your worksheets, test papers and exam practice papers.
Avoid silly mistakes of not writing your units or not checking your work.
Take no longer than 25min to do your MCQ, no longer than 35min to do your Section B. Allocate about 60min to do your problem sums and the remaining 15min to check your work.
Check your work and keep on re-checking until the last minute of the exam.

Science

Go through all your worksheets, test papers and textbooks.
Spend no longer than 45min for MCQ and leave about 40min for your Section B. Spend the last 20min to check your work.
Be careful with spelling mistakes as it will cost you half a mark each!
Always write your answer such that it is clear and the marker need not come back to ask you for any clarification. That is, make your answer 'foolproof' whereby anybody (without any science knowledge) who reads it knows what you are saying!

Key Learning Points:

A food chain shows the food relationship between organisms.
A collection (connected together) of more than 1 food chain is call a food web.
Plants are producers because they can make their own food.
The rest of the organisms in the food web/chain are consumers - they consume or eat other organisms.
All organisms obtain their energy either directly (like herbivores) or indirectly from plants.
A prey is an animal that is being hunted or eaten by other animals.
A predator is an animal that hunts or eats other animals.
Herbivores are animals that eat plants only. All herbivores are preys.
Carnivores are animals that eat animals only.
Ominovores are animals that eat both plants and animals.
Carnivores and omnivores can be both a prey or predator.
All food chains/web are in balance. The producers form the largest population.
Removing or introducing organisms into a food chain/web can cause an imbalance, thereby may result in extinction of certain groups of organisms.
At the tail end of a food chain/web, the population of that organism is the smallest.
Example: Grass ==> Grasshoppers ==> Chickens ==> Snake (You'll expect grass to have the biggest population while the snake to have the smallest population.)

Oral Exams Tips

Reading Aloud (10 marks)

Greet the examiner - set him/her in a good mood first
Read loud and clear
Do not read too fast or too slow
Change your tone; add in your emotions while reading (so that you will not sound like a robot)
Remember to pause when you come across a comma or a full stop.
For words which you are not sure in pronouncing, just try your best to read that word, and read as per normal (no stopping, same speed) so that you will not draw too much attention to that wrong 'word'.

Picture Discussion (10 marks)

Firstly, describe the place shown in the picture (e.g. "This picture shows a school canteen.")
Start from one side (left or right side), describe what you see in the picture
Add your comments about what you have just described (e.g. "The boy looks grumpy. I think it is because he does not have enough money to buy his food")
Give your own suggestions or explanations to that situation you have described (e.g. "That boy should have checked his wallet for enough money before going to school.")

Conversation (10 marks)

Treat the examiner as your friend or relative - chat with him/her
Make sure you talk about the given exam topic and not about other topics
Speak up loud and clear
Talk more than the examiner
Thank the examiner

Remember:

Oral exam is the time for you to TALK! No talk, no marks! What sets you to be different from the rest (and therefore earning high marks) is to say different things from others.

The "Polar Bear" Game

Besides the fun and suspense, I hope you guys had also learnt about the values of integrity and honesty, as well as being able to differentiate right from wrong. In addition, you can also pick up certain skills in observing people's actions (especially when they are telling lies).

Perimeter = Add up all the exposed sides
Area of Rectangle = Length x Breadth
Area of a Square = Length x Length
Area of a Triangle = 1/2 x Base x Perpendicular Height
Area of a Circle = 'pi' x radius x radius
Break up the irregular figure into shapes which you are familiar with.
Fill up the missing dimensions.
Apply the respective area formulae.
Add up or subtract the areas (depending on the questions)

Do be familiar with your multiplication table:

U8: Pie Charts

Key Learning Points:

A complete pie chart represents one (1) whole of the data being measured.
It can also mean 100% of the data which it is measuring on.
Like a circle, the complete pie chart will have 360 deg angles in the centre.
Thus the size of a pie chart slice can be measured by its angle. For example: A 90 degree angle of a slice of pie chart would mean 90/360 = 1/4 (1 quarter).
Read the questions carefully. They may be asking for actual data figures, fractions, percentages or even ratios.

U7: Characteristics of the Environment

Key Learning Points:

The environment is made up of all the living and non-living things around us that affect our lives.

We need to study the characteristics of the environment because it affects the survival of organisms.

The 7 characteristics are "S.O.F.T. L.A.W.":

Soil

Other organisms

Food

Temperature

Light

Air

Water

"W.A.L.T.S." are physical characteristics.

We can use devices such as dataloggers to capture / record data regarding physical characteristics.

U4: Industries in Singapore

I know it was quite a rush during the last period trying to cover this heavy topic. Just to briefly summarise again:

After gaining independence, Singapore was facing a high unemployment rate (too many people but too few jobs to go around).
This led to people getting poor, not having enough food and lots of other social problems.
The solution would be to create jobs by setting up industries and factories.
However to attract investors to come and set up factories, Singapore needed to promote itself as a suitable place to them.
First step would be to prepare the place (build roads, set up electrical and water systems etc)
Next, it would be to try and advertise/promote the country globally so as to attract investors.
The various industries include tourism (think about tourists), financial (think about banks) and Biomedical Science (think about scientists, researchers and engineers).
All these help Singapore to "Earn Money" for everyone.

Key Learning Points:

The diameter of a circle is a straight line that starts from one point on the circle's perimeter, cutting through the centre of the circle and reaching the other point on the perimeter.
The radius is a straight line drawn from the centre of the circle to the perimeter of the circle
Thus 2 x radius = diameter
Circumference is the perimeter of a circle
Circumference = 'pi' x diameter or 'pi' x (2 x radius)
'pi' is generally taken to be 22/7 or 3.14 (questions will tell you which 'pi' to use)
Area of a Circle = 'pi' x radius x radius

Generally, be careful with the units in this topic and if possible, try to use 'pi' as 22/7 as it is neater and does not contain decimals.

U6: Living Together

Key Learning Points:

An organism is a living thing
A population is a group of similar organisms that lives and reproduce together in the same place
A habitat is the place where an organism or a population live, reproduce and finding food and shelter
A community refers to many populations staying together in the same habitat
All organisms in a community are interdependent, that is, they depend on each other for survival
Be able to identify the types of organisms in the various habitats and communities

Examples of interdependence include:

Green plants provide oxygen to animals during photosynthesis
Animals and other plants provide carbon dioxide to the green plants during respiration
Plants provide food and shelter to animals
Animals' waste droppings fertilise the soil to help plants grow healthily

Terrariums:

These are transparent enclosures where a mini-habitat is created for selected plants and animals of the same community
The main purpose is to allow us to examine how each of the organisms affect/depend on each other for survival
The observations are quire accurate as a terrarium roughly represents what that would take place in a real community / habitat

U5: Forces

Key Learning Points:

In this chapter you've learnt about the 4 types of forces.

(a) Frictional Forces (Or Friction)

This force exists whenever 2 surfaces come into contact with each other
Friction opposes (resist) motion and can cause wear and tear as well as producing heat (thereby causing overheating in machinery)
However without it, we will not be able to walk properly or hold onto things
We can never eliminate friction but we can reduce them
Methods include adding lubricants (oil or grease), rollers and wheels, ball bearings or powder

(b) Gravitational Forces (Or Gravity)

This is the pulling force of the Earth on all objects, which is measure by our weight
It is different from mass, which is how much matter an object has
Thus weight is NOT EQUAL to mass
Gravity can work against us (e.g. climbing up stairs require more force to overcome gravity) or work in our favour (e.g. going down a slope)
The gravity on the moon is 1/6 of the Earth's gravity. Thus we would weigh lighter on the moon than on the Earth

(c) Elastic Spring Force

This force is present in springs or elastic bands
When a pulling force is applied, the spring or elastic band is stretched. Upon releasing, the elastic spring force will cause the spring or elastic band to return to its original length
The original length of the spring will be when there is no force/mass attached to it
The extension of the spring is the result of a pulling force exerted on it

(d) Magnetic Force

These are the forces of attraction and repulsion of a magnet
Like poles of a magnet repels (pushes away) while unlike poles attract (pulls together)
Magnetic materials can be attracted to a magnet, regardless of the poles
E.g. Steel, Iron, Nickel, Cobalt, Manganese
Magnetic material are not magnets. They need to be magnetised first either by the stroking method or the electrical method (resulting in an electromagnet)

U6: Time & Speed

Key Learning Points:

(A) Time

Time is like the name given to any moment. E.g. 4.45p.m., 9.45a.m. etc
It is fixed at any one time
It can be written in the 12 hour clock or 24 hour clock
In the 24 hour clock, 0000 is midnight, that is, the start of a new day. Thus in the 24 hour clock format, the time starts from 0000 to 2359.
Duration is a measurement of how much time an activity takes. E.g. 1h, 5h 30 min, 45s, 38min etc
NEVER add or subtract time and duration together as they are 2 different things! E.g. 1.45pm + 15min = 2pm WRONG!!>
When dealing with time and duration, always draw a timeline to represent your workings

(B) Speed

This means how fast an object or person is travelling at any unit (1) time
Distance = Speed x Time
Before you apply the formula, always make sure that the units of each of the above parts are 'talking' to each other.
Meaning to say, if speed is given as km/h, make sure that the distance must be in 'km' and time in 'h'. (Do the necessary conversions e.g. 1km = 1000m and 1h = 60min)
After solving for the answer, double check that your answer has the same unit as what the question wants. E.g. if the question wants you to give time in hours, make sure you convert your time from minutes to hour.
When finding Average Speed, find the total distance and divide it by the total time taken.

This topic is not that difficult as long as you are very careful and alert with the units and the way you present your workings. All speed questions must have these 3 parts (Distance, Speed, and Time). All you need to do is to find them, make sure the units 'talk' to each other and apply the formula and some common sense into it.

At this stage, I just want to thank everyone for sharing with me your thoughts and feelings in your weekly journals. Although some of you have still been 'reporting' about what you did during the day, I would just want to clarify again that this journal writing exercise is a channel for you to do some reflection or self-thinking about the things you have done, events that you have encountered and how you feel about them. In addition, if you have any problems that are troubling you, you can pen it down as well too.

It really has been a pleasure reading your journals and all the sharings of your ups and downs. From these sharing as well from my replies, I'm sure we get to know more about each other.

About your current seating arrangement, I am delighted to find out that you guys missed your old group mates and that you have shown that you have forged good friendship with your classmates. As for your new groupings, it is still too early to say that you do not like them. After all, it has only been two weeks and you guys still have at least 8 more weeks to go. Thus do get to know your new group mates now and who knows, you might love them even more!

To those of you who are running out of ideas to write in your journals, you may want to share about what you have learnt in school for that day.

Do keep these sharings coming in. I'll be looking forward to read them every Friday. :)

6 Excellence!

How's 2008 so far? Feeling breathless from the never-ending onslaught of homework and projects? Seeing stars over Mathematics? Getting speechless and 'idea-less' in your compositions and journal writings? Confused over the theories in Science? Finding the elusive time amidst your CCA, tuition, homework, religious classes, computers and TV?

Time is flying. If you have noticed, the countdown timer used to be over 230 days but now, it is 186 days now to the BIG day. Time sure is running out. Yes, this is a stressful year. No doubts about it.

All that I want to say is, the (current) going is tough but only the tough people (like you guys) get going and moving forward. Learn to manage your time; do the important things first. Work on your weak areas more and be conscientious in your daily work. Lastly, ask the teacher whenever in doubt!

Do be prepared that more and more practice exam papers for English, Math and Science are heading our way. Please treat them as your friends who are here to familiarise you with the PSLE standards as well as to help you discover your weak areas for you to work on.

I'll end this post by this sentence: Do not forget our class name - Excellence: DO YOUR VERY BEST!!!

Just to clarify the requirements for this project:

You need to find an article (that is, words and words in passages, if possible, to have pictures) about a real natural disaster. From that article, you do a mind-map at the bottom of your workbook's page 9, similar to the one on page 8. Write down what are the impacts or how they affect humans and their activities.

It must be about a real natural disaster that has taken place in the past or present.

Print out the article and paste it on the top portion of page 9 in your workbook. If your article is from a magazine or newspapers, you can still follow the same procedures too.

Submission date is 29th Feb (Fri).

U5: Percentages

Key Learning Points:

You can treat them as fractions that are out of a whole of 100 (that is, 58% means 58 out of 100 parts).
This also mean that the denominator of the fraction is 100.
If you see questions involving percentages, you can change them into fractions by removing the '%' sign, then add a denominator '100' (that is, 88% = '88/100').
Thus if a question say 20% of 40 pupils, it will mean '20/100' of 40 pupils, or when simplified, it means '1/5' of 40 pupils.
Alternatively, you can convert a fraction or a decimal to a percentage by multiplying it by 100%, with the '%' symbol in your working. Else the working will be marked wrong.

Key Learning Points:

The 4 main sources (where they come from) of energy are as follow:

1. The Sun (a.k.a. Solar Energy) - Renewable Energy Resource

Most of the energy that we use comes directly or indirectly from the Sun.

2. Fuel - Non-renewable Energy Resource

When fuels are burnt, chemical energy in them are converted to heat and light energy.

3. Wind - Renewable Energy Resource

Wind is moving air and has kinetic energy.

4. Moving Water - Renewable Energy Resource

Moving water has kinetic energy.

All the above sources of energy are converted to other forms of useful energy. In this topic on Energy, you must be able to explain and identify the types of energy changes that are taking place. That is the gist of this topic.

Situational Writing

As the name goes, you are given a situation and you need to respond accordingly to that given situation. Be it a letter, an email or writing a note for someone, you must bear in mind the objectives (or aims / targets) of your writing.

Are you trying to relay information, ask questions, send an invitation or submit a complaint?

What do you want the recipient do?

What is the tone of your writing? Are you polite enough (especially when you are asking for a favour)?

Have you written down all the important 5 or 6 points given in the question? Are these points clear, specific and foolproof to the reader?

Have you written your greetings at the beginning of your writing and sign off at the end of it?

Lastly, re-read it again yourself. Imagine you are the recipient. Do you understand the message? Is there enough information for you to reply the sender?

Situational writing takes up 15 marks in your overall EL exam scores (upon 200 marks). This section is an easy section for you to score well so please take note of the above pointers when doing your situational writing.

U4: Ratio

Key Learning Points:

(This is just to reinforce what that was learnt back in your P5 Math) Ratios are similar to fractions. The only difference lies in the comparison of parts to parts whilst in fractions, it is always parts to a whole.

Always simplify your ratios (just like fractions).

In your workings, give a heading to your ratios so that you know which parts you are comparing against with.

When changing the ratios to equivalent ratios, make sure you either use the arrow sign or the equal sign.

Do not write 2 ratios 'floating' in your working statements. You must show how they are related.

Time to 'Mug'

The long Chinese New Year holidays are over. Time to get down to business!

Do expect things to pick up fast again and homework rolling in daily. Yes, there's no denial that P6 is a stressful level. Tonnes of tests and homeworks and revision papers. Not much time is left too (I've posted a count down timer to PSLE on the top left corner of the blog).

However, nothing is impossible when you set your heart out to do it. Do learn to plan your time properly. Have sufficient rest and play time too but work has still got to be completed. Manage your time and stress properly before they manage you. Start revision early, go through your daily exercises, paying extra attention on those corrections or areas which you're weak at. Re-do them and test yourself if you really mastered them.

Remember: this is your exams! Not your parents' or your teachers'. You are the one taking it. Not your parents, not your teachers.

The choice is yours. Either start (or wake up) now or never. However, the responsibility for the consequence will still be yours to bear...

Some of you have blogs and I'm happy to see that you guys are quite tech-savvy. Good for you!

However there are some reminders which I need to bring up regarding blogging:

Be careful of giving away too much personal information of yourself (e.g. address, telephone numbers, pictures) as your blog is open to the whole world.
Even though it is your own personal blog, do be careful of whatever you post there. Any illegal pictures, contents or remarks that are offensive can bring trouble to you.
Last but not least, please be a responsible blogger. Although you can say whatever you want but you must be prepared to bear the consequences and responsibilities of your blog contents.

For the many of you who are weak in your grammar, I would like to recommend you to get this book. It covers a lot of details in your basic grammar and also offers many exercises to practise on.

This book can be found in Popular Bookstore and costs about $8+.

I would strongly encourage pupils to get this book as it is extremely useful for those of you who are very weak in your grammar (or if you are speaking too much 'Singlish').
